Lesson 12 - New Zealand Records

New Zealand Records.

There are many good web sites where you can search for information.
·
NZ Historic Births, Deaths and Marriages.

I’ve mentioned these before, like most BDM INDEXES you can pick up a lot of information for free. The only drawback with this site is that you cannot use wildcard or fuzzy searches. You may need to get creative when spelling the surname you are looking for.

I had the name de St Laurent. I found entries under the following and there were more that I couldn’t find:
·        de St Laurent
·        Laurent (the main change)
·        Laurence
·        Lawrence

Other than this, the site is quite easy to navigate. Take the time to read “Data Collected” and “About the Records.”

The NZ equivalent of TROVE.

As most will know, newspapers can help with more “modern” BDM’s and obituaries can have useful information.

Use the filters to help narrow your search. You can specify dates, area and even just one newspaper. Newspaper articles can also help to put “flesh on the bones” of your ancestors.

·       Archives New Zealand. http://archives.govt.nz/
Like NSW State Archives. Click on the Archway tab then enter your search query.

Using this, you should be able to access WWI Service Records which you can then download for free. Plus, there are more record collections. Try key word searches.
·
          Shipping Records.
Great site if you know the name of the ship your ancestors travelled on.

Passenger Lists for ships bound for NZ.
This is a link page that will take you other web sites.

This link will take you to FamilySeach where you can search just this record set. NOTE: It covers assisted emigrants mainly.

Another links page with useful links to more records for various wars, shipping records, vital records and regional records.
