Lesson 3 - Searching Trove

Searching Trove:-

1.

      Click on Advanced Search:-

2.     Type the name into the Phrase section.

You can then either narrow down the dates (if you know the timeframe you want) and the places (i.e. NSW, VICTORIA etc).  and then scroll down the bottom of the page – click search on the far right side of the screen.

You can also narrow it down further on the main page by picking the type of article you want :-

This is how the page will look (roughly)

I have used one of my own family members as an example (and they have been researched extensively LOL).  So I know that the information that is contained in the first few family notices are in relation to the person I am searching for.
Obviously if you are new to researching you will not know if these are you family or not.  So you will need to go through them to see if you can find any familiar names.

The best ones to start with are death notices.  If you are lucky (and you won’t always be), a death notice will have the spouse as well as the children’s names in the notice.

Also just one little point here – If you put the first and the last name of the person you are looking for it will bring up those names and include any that have a middle name as well.

This isn’t the only way to search for information.  You can just use the person’s surname (and hope it isn’t Smith/Brown or even Evans LOL).

It is the same process, using the Surname in the Exact Phrase box and narrowing it down (i.e State and Decade),  but it will mean that you have much more to search through.  It can take a lot of patience, but if you are willing to spend the time you can often find something for your ancestor.

Also you can try different options for searching.  For example if you were trying to find some information in relation to land then you could use the word Land in the box All of these words as well as the Surname in “The Phrase” box.  Don’t forget to narrow down state and decade.

Alternatively if you were looking for an inquest – substitute the word “Inquest” in the All of these words box and perhaps instead of the person’s name put the area where they died.
